I think the answer is the size of the country. We're smaller than Texas and we have a legal system which is consistently evolving rather than set in a reference constitution. The law applies equally and doesn't vary from shire to shire - with some minor variations for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This means there are challenges and counter challenges, things are legally interpreted one way and then re-examined on appeal - so in that way we're very much at the forefront of the various debates. Throw in Rowling as the nemesis of the entire Trans-community and we're centred in the discussion in a fair bit more than perhaps we should be. Throw in the closure of the GIDS service at the Tavistock and the Bell exposé and we're pretty much the front line of where these arguments are playing out in the modern discourse.
