I think the Germans did a better job with their Rommel memorial. I'm not sad to see a statue of Lee go, but think attention should be paid to learning the lessons of history rather than attempting to erase it completely. I feel uncomfortable about a society that embraces iconoclasm by mob rule (as happened in Bristol over here) - and I think there are better ways of ensuring future generations consider the wider implication of the actions of the past.
