I think the media world and journalism has gone outside of sound reality on both sides. Chasing the approval of echo chambers has led to a lack of journalistic integrity across the board - and people are caught in their own reality with no way of bridging that gap.
The extremist economic left is only 5% of your population - but that's not really what the problem is. The progressive left and the lure of identity politics has hijacked a great deal of the left discourse. The subtle blend of Marxism (class struggle) postmodernism (being able to define your own truth) and identity politics - means that people assert they are both oppressed and offended, without offering anything other than their subjective statements. The average Republican (and even centre lefties like me) can see that this is a massive own goal - yet it's formed an integral part of the left agenda. The extremists control the discourse - take a look at the editors of the Medium publications, hell.... take a look at Medium overall. This used to be a place of debate and discussion. Now it's puff pieces screaming into the echo chamber.
The only way to overcome the extremist right is to push people back into the centre ground. It's reaching the reachable Republicans. It's talking about the virtues of people like John McCain, it's about talking the language of reason. They may hold two levels of Government but we must be careful about using words like 'coup' when talking about properly voted in people and legally appointed judges. It's not ideal, I grant you, but it's within the rules. Talk of 'coups' plays into the hands of the Right Wing media bubble.
As a parting shot, I'd like to compare the current situation it to the end of WWII. The Nuremberg trials condemned those who were guilty of crimes - but there was no retribution on the German public. These people had to have time to deprogram themslves. Many of these people were punished roundly by WWI reparations. Punitive reactions set the tone for the Right to get a proper foothold in Germany across the 1920s. It'll do the same in America in the 2020s albeit in a much more insidious manner.
Love debating you (as always!) thanks for the comments and keeping my rhetoric sane. :o)
