I think the wiggle room is in the word ‘advantage’. I think it’s fairly evident when the sport in question is lifting a heavy object above your head.
But I was once piled on by men and women alike for suggesting that Premier league football (Soccer) should allow women to compete. This was met with derision by men and seen as a way of keeping women in the lower divisions of the game.
My reasoning was around the ability of disadvantaged humans to adapt to their circumstances. I suspected (and do still suspect) that new strategies would evolve, loopholes would be discovered, tactics would appear that are non-sensical to the current game but taken over 20 years would result in some women finding their way into the top flight of football.
The wiggle room comes with the word ‘advantage’ in my penguin opinion. Great article, thought provoking and reasoned as always :o)
