I think there are two things that need addressing here. Firstly, the fact that the education system pushes you to the political left. I was on the political left before I went to Uni by virtue of my class - when I got to Uni, I found a lot of people espousing leftist politics, who'd never experienced poverty, never really had any barriers to entry and who felt their liberalism was reflective of mine. I felt, and do still strongly feel, those peopl have hijacked the left wing and made it an exercise in semantics and posturing. Many of the people I went to University with are now academics and PhD students in their own right - many of them came from very safe, very secure, very privileged upbringings comparatively with my own. Their heart is in the right place, but their politics is wrong. They have now radicalised the next generation into an echo chamber. University is no longer a neutral place for education, it's a place for political radicalisation by the middle class for the middle class into an echo bubble of economic cluelessness. Champagne socialism begins entirely at Freshers week.

The second thing stems from the first.... as college educated people have moved away from economic socialism and into identarianism, their arguments around how to change the world have become increasingly esoteric. If your entire belief structure is based on the fact that skin colour or genital arrangement is at the root of all power hierarchies - then you can make that case.... but in a Western Democracy, where the vast majority of people don't a) give a shit about history or b) give much of a shit of anything outside of their own economic interests - you will remain on the fringes of the electoral system. Waving the sword of rhetoric around like a lunatic mostly injures your own side. The political right will mobilise behind anyone and close ranks - they're like the Romans. The political left are far more like Berserkers.... and whilst the two might be evenly matched in the odd battle, most of the time the Romans gave the Barbarians a good thrashing.

The failure of the left is educating people so much they think they're clever. They aren't. They're academic and there's a difference. The practical applications for the latter aren't as useful in the real world- and it takes about 3.4 seconds to put a social justice warrior into a self-defeating argument or self-contradictory position. Like here. https://medium.com/lucid-nightmare/do-you-want-cultural-appropriation-or-trans-inclusion-de3726343f3c The average liberal is neither liberal or left, they may read a lot of books but they don't know what they really think about anything unless someone tells them.
