I think we broadly agree. Safe spaces aren't the root cause of all evil, but anyone with even the slightest background in Psychology will tell you why they promote anxiety rather than reduce it. No platforming and cancel culture goes against my libertarian left position. Whilst I think there should be a protective requirement for the Government for it's people, I remain very uncomfortable about laws and socially endorsed surpression of discourse more generally.

The current iteration of the social contract is the bastard lovechild of Marx, which is where the legitimate discussion of class are to be found - and Derrida or Post Structuralists, who believe that truth can be whatever we want it to mean. The breakdown of the former into the tangled kalaidoscope of the latter is causing a total loss of focus. By insisting on a never ending game of oppression bingo, working class white communities (who don't share the same levels of privilage as liberal metropolitan whites- but who are treated as if they do) are easily moved to the right by demagoguery.

Good luck on getting any identity group to drop their identity in favour of a classic Marxist argument. It's far less glamourous (though more valid) and you will be accused of mansplaining, white washing, or the hateful crime of being unwoke.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply and carrying on the conversation. I hope your work finds its natural home here and you stick around to bring in all sorts of insight and nuance to what is a very US centric platform. It's like us Brits don't exist!
