I trained social workers for a long time - and I could spot the ones who didn’t know what to do after their degrees and are just killing a bit of time until they can have a baby and move into part time work and a nice house. They were lovely, but lacked a lot of insight. Front line child protection would see them last two years max, the worst ones would then go into locum work and hold tiny caseloads on inflated wages, or go off with ‘stress’ and not leave. The ones who survived generally thrived and turned into decent social workers who became managers. It’s a real problem for social work and other professions. It’s can become a half-hearted holding career for middle class women who half a century ago would’ve eschewed the workforce entirely.
