I would say that fundamentalism itself is a reaction to a world moving away from doctrine... what I meant by the phrase 'complexity breeds moderates' is that until people interact with these issues first hand they won't know where they truly stand.

Forty years ago, if you were a gay man in the UK, your parents may have kicked you out and disowned you. But many parents didn't do that.... many parents when confronted with the real life complexity of doctrine vs their own child's happiness attempt to re-categorise the doctrine.... not all, but some.

I was the chosen supportive friend twenty years ago when a mate of mine came out to her vicar father and vicar's wife mother. It threw their entire life into the air; some parishioners weren't happy, there was a backlash... .but many people moderated. They are LGBTQ+ inclusive now. That won't happen with everyone, but it happens enough to ensure that fundamentalism becomes a smaller and smaller faction of the overall faith.

Please note, I am a Brit, so it might be different over in the US where everyone seems a little bit 'all the way up to eleven' about everything. :o)
