I would suggest that debate with idealogues is almost impossible - whether you're nice to them and attempt to initiate a discussion or whether you're more abrupt and dissent in a more assertive way. An ideology always prevails over rationality. I'd suggest this is because an ideology is far closer to a form of faith rather than a debating position.

Given that you can't change their mind, the next recourse should be to mitigate their message, so that others don't get swept up and adopt what you believe is a maladaptive ideology. That can be done politely or firmly. It seems Mr Shetterly does the latter.

That's when people wade into the debate with strong feelings, get turned right around and bounce off again to block him. Usually the phrase 'I don't want to waste my time talking to you' pops up - as is often the case with my work.

But by bouncing in and bouncing out and being underprepared, they leave a legacy for future readers to consider. Perhaps ideology isn't the way forward for young impressionable people. I certainly don't think so.

Always nice to find you out and about whilst I'm having a Medium ramble through the wilderness. Good to see you holding everyone to account and not just me! :o)
