I write because words are the closest thing we have to telepathy and words are important. I never studied journalism and I never learned how to properly use a semi-colon... but I did spend an inordinate amount of my childhood engrossed in a book and living in magical worlds and falling in love with people who didn't really exist.
I am, at heart, a playwright. I like writing ideas and building worlds and inviting other people to play in them - but I also enjoy people. What playwright doesn't hope to find interesting people out and about in the world? Now I share my time between writing opinionated rants and humorous pieces and writing spec scripts whilst I wait to break into television.
It took me about a year of writing on Medium to find my voice and find out what I want to write - but now I love it. I do a couple of hours a day, sometimes i schedule and take a week off - and mostly I use it as a chance to warm up my brain before I descend into the world of scripts. I very quickly learned not to be a perfectionist on here - that doesn't mean I'm a sloppy writer, just that I can write an article on day 1 and publish it on day 2 and the world doesn't end.
Release those pent up ideas and write with truth, you won't please everybody, but you'll please some of the people some of the time... and that's enough. That's all I've been doing since 2018. I haven't amassed a huge audience, I haven't had a stellar career on Medium - but I'm still here and i'm still enjoying myself.
And yes, SO MANY of the most interesting writers on this platform lurk in the comments. I have pleaded with people I've agreed with and those I've disagreed with to start their articles. Everyone has interesting things to say but some of the dullest writers on this platform have the largest audiences.
Keep writing your truth and keep encouraging and fostering the next batch of talent. If you write for yourself, the audience will come. It's nice to have found you on this random Tuesday and I look forward to more of your work.
Keep on keeping on. AP. :o)
