I'd love to claim it as my own idea - but alas, I heard it once on a podcast about something or other (I listen to a lot of podcasts) and someone was making the point that cave art viewed under electric lightbulbs was not how it was experienced at all and that we were doing it a disservice.

It was more likely to be in a cave filled with flickering firelight and perhaps a bit of smoke.... the person who was talking drew the parallel with cinema/theatre and reminded me that these pictures were up before written language and perhaps before complex linguistics. This could've been storytelling and the cutting edge of animation of its day.

It had never occurred to me before and since then it's been lodged in my brain. I love it when a new way of viewing the world pops up from time to time :o)
