If you ask me what the male equivalent is, I’d say protein bars like Grenade and pre-workout. Marketed at a particular demographic and done so very successfully. I don’t think there’s a quality food divide here, both the PSL and the average protein bar are rammed with ultra processed nonsense.
We can make generalisations about the sort of people who fall for the marketing, but I’d argue those generalisations are well inside the bell curve of who is being targeted and the reasons for it. There are likely women who have grenade bars and men who drink the PSL, but they aren’t the target demographic. Whether or not this is a gender issue I’m unsure, it feels low down in the feminism agenda though.
The only person I know who drinks an old fashioned is a small Danish woman. I’m always on the gender neutral Long Island iced tea.
