If you believe completely in a cause then you cease to be an independent thinker. If you are not an independent thinker then your personality is being constructed by those around you. I think this is true whether you are a Nazi, most of whom sacrificed their personhood entirely, an evangelical religious person or a social justice warrior.

This piece was about the difficulties of the modern era in particular… because many young people are trying to work out who they are by trying to fit in. They have become activists because it gives them a group identity and a sense of inclusion whilst simultaneously eroding their unique personhood.

I am a firm believer in individuals and individual thinking — because, whilst you cannot directly compare Nazis, communists, evangelical christians and social justice warriors because their causes are different — the processes which exist underneath are the same. That I think is dangerous. Here’s an article that touches on the same thing, but is slightly easier to follow. https://medium.com/lucid-nightmare/nazis-in-our-classes-the-50-year-old-lesson-about-fascism-still-terrifying-us-today-839c3222dc23
