I'm a left-leaning socialist who enjoys the cut and thrust of debate - I enjoy reading deep philosophical articles too and think Medium are getting better at promoting this work. I really enjoyed your Rectionism is not Populism article for example. That said, I also enjoy reading the lay-perspective. My concern with Medium isn't that I'm finding too much stuff I disagree with (politically speaking) it's that I'm finding too much I agree with and furthermore, those carrying the political torch for 'my team' are not smart enough to do so, have been monetised in the direction of demagoguery, and have the tools to remove dissent at source. This is a heady combination for the psychology of any human - and i'd argue on Medium the tendency is for publications to skew left - and as Dave Murray points out, the old liberal left (to which I subscribe) is being supplanted by a more vociferous identity movement which I neither endorse or enjoy (that's why I'm a Penguin)
When Ben and I say we're different, we do mean it. He's got a dislike of both parties in the US, but I suspect he'd fit into the political right over here. He's Christian, I'm atheist, he's married, I don't believe in marriage, he's an ex-soldier, I'm a conscientious objector (though tbf nobody has asked me to go to war). He's a heavy metal fan, the closest I'll go to that is Meatloaf. He owns his identity and tells his stories to help others, I eschew mine and refuse to talk about my real life apart from in the broadest terms.
But both of us can and will debate and hopefully cultivate others to do the same. :o)
