I'm fairly convinced on the balance of probabilities that the Allied Forces knew about Auschwitz and other camps from about 1942, but knowing about it and openly discovering it are different things entirely in the context of a war. This deliberate tactical oversight by the British and Americans, may have been a factor at play in the creation of Israel.
