I'm in the UK and I'm very clear with everyone I advise, the police are not your friends, you do not have to help them sort anything out, they are not trying to help you get to the bottom of the matter, no matter how nice they seem, no matter how much they want you to answer their questions, no matter how much they tell you it would be easier for you to cooperate with investigations.... you just don't. They are the armed wing of the state, their job is to gather evidence to prosecute people. When I was falsely accused (and attended a voluntary police interview under caution) I said the same two words for over two hours 'No comment'. I would advise EVERYONE in the same situation to do exactly the same and to get a lawyer present as soon as possible. 'No comment' in the UK is particularly useful, but it's far more effective in the US where you plead the fifth. https://medium.com/p/eee659a90c45
