I'm more than prepared to sit on the fence and listen to both sides of the argument. That's generally what an intelligent society does before it moves in any given direction.

Identity is a complex thing, and identity politics is complicating it further. I have no issue with anyone choosing to identify however they please, provided it doesn't cause harm to anyone else. That's a libertarian position I choose to hold. But group identity and individual identity are different things conflated to become the same thing under identity politics.

I don't hold with a world view in which groups of people are viewed caught in a power struggle. It's counter productive. It leads to meaningless echo chamber thinking and heels being dug in. The discussion moves quickly onto the minutiae of oppression and away from reality, without concentrating efforts where they need to be. Social workers. Police officers. Teachers. Counsellors. Reaching out to vulnerable teens with well informed solutions to these complex problems.

When the world is viewed through the lens of identity politics, individual kindness goes out of the window. Everyone is out to get everyone else. That's how it works. Instead of thinking about how to progress the plight of 'our group' - we should be considering how to grow as indiivuals. That happens to be true whether we're trans or not.
