I'm presuming you're American - as nobody in the UK has said 'dang' since 1943 and you've missed the U in colour. So yes, white privilege is a core issue in your country, but this article was about my country. The two are different places.

We can all play rhetoric based silly buggers about sly white folks and throw words like 'gaslight' around. I've written an article about the overuse of that term. You can find it here. https://medium.com/lucid-nightmare/gaslight-gaslight-why-am-i-gaslit-everywhere-i-go-c9280a0a3b37 - not every opposing view to your own is 'gaslighting' - sometimes it's just plain disagreement.

As the article says, and most of my other writing will verify - I have zero problem with the concept of 'white privilege'; both as a conceptual idea and as a way of viewing the world. I question the validity of using it as a way to combat racism. All the things that you've highlighted are problems caused by systemic racism - but here's the rub.... an over focus on systemic racism as the cause of ALL societal ill will force the white working class demos to the right. You can't beat racial division by bringing out a bigger bat marked 'racial division' - you've got to be smarter than that.

You can sit in a lovely middle class bubble and suggest that all black people are more oppressed than all white people and when it comes to some aspects of society I'll agree with you - but that's not a catch all argument you can sell to 60% of the US population who are white and working class. You won't get them on board, and if you don't get them on board then whichever passing republican demagogue certainly will.

I go into a lot more detail here. https://medium.com/lucid-nightmare/what-we-all-lose-when-society-plays-identity-politics-397dcb896d5b

The difference between my country and your country is that many of our POC are already becoming disenfranchised by the virtue signalling of the white middle class left. My country has managed to make in roads on systemic racism, including re-balancing some of the advantages in the education system through programmes. That's why white rural kids seem to be more disadvantaged than many of the urban POC - something this article has highlighted. You think you can sell White Privilege as a concept in a gritty Northern British town, go ahead - be my guest.

The problem with racism is multi-faceted, complicated and a simple pasting over the nuances with 'all white people are sly, evil, pseudo-race theorists' doesn't really help. Words put out into the atmosphere do need to be intelligent, thought through and occasionally difficult - otherwise they're just out there hanging around as ad-hominem attacks masquerading as analysis.
