I’m with one of the other commentators here - that you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Had the Western World done nothing, then this would be touted as evidence of racism. The governments did nothing and Geldof filled a gap, and I think it genuinely came from a good place. Geldof was not individually responsible for the framing over the next 39 years and I think it’s disingenuous to suggest he was. He found a way to make money flow from where it was pooling - and move it to where it was needed. That’s socialism.

That said, and before I get a baffling non-sequitur explosion from the Bishop. The framing isn’t without problems, it has coloured the views of millions of people incorrectly - but if the 40th anniversary avoids a hagiographic focus on the singers and instead has significant input from African voices and political figures about what is actually needed in these places then it could do some good and change minds.

It may not be that. I don’t know. I don’t programme the BBC.

That said, in the ongoing game of ‘whack a white’ played by identity politics adherents, I don’t think smacking a socialist, one who saw an urgent need and (however misguided his actions eventually turned out to be) attempted to help is quite the win it initially seems.
