It depends on the mission of the publication doesn't it? I suspect you wouldn't support the rights of an editor to hire only white writers.... and neither would I. If you don't support the rights of people to hire on the basis of skin colour then you shouldn't support it at all. That's the end of the story. Unless of course, you want to come out swinging for the rights of white editors to continue to reject the work of BIPOC writers on spurious grounds. Society has come a long way from challenging that narrative and if what you want is judgment free from skin colour, you can't centre skin colour as an argument.

I wouldn't expect the Swedish Historical society to give me a scholarship either - but if I carefully researched and wrote an amazing article about Swedish history then it's neither here nor there where I was born or what insights I have from being Swedish. Being Swedish may give you an advantage in such a competition - but to simply programme work by Swedish people regardless of quality at the expense of other work is a shortsighted way to get the best work.

I didn't assume this woman was the best writer, I assumed her work would be deconstructed and viewed on its merits or foibles. If she had nothing interesting to say and it lacked insight, then it wasn't good writing - but that isn't why her work was rejected is it? It was rejected on the grounds that her identity didn't fit. You aren't required to hire anyone because they need money - but if you open a publication and you discriminate against people on the grounds of their skin colour, and you enforce that discrimination using the power of social media to leverage your agenda, then I think it's unacceptable.

If that's the sort of world you want to create then fine - but that's not exactly the tolerant world of racial harmony I think we should be working towards.
