It depends on the religious belief in question. Whilst I don't demonise religious beliefs but what do we do with cultural issues like marrying children or female genital mutilation? Criticism of such things can hide behind the banner of religious freedom but I'd argue have no place in a tolerant moderate society. If disagreeing with someone's religious beliefs means I am involved in protecting children from harm then I a fine to do this.

I'm sure you can see the direction of travel this might take. People get very funny about child protection and ascribe all sorts of erroneous beliefs to protecting children. I think with gender identity your call for tolerance is a good one - but there needs to be some discussion around the limits of that tolerance, as there should be with religion and indeed all cultural movements.

This issue is complicated - and most people don't want to debate it, they just want to shout at others about it in a moralistic panic. :o)
