It is, and anyone can write for it. But a large part of what fuels the number of readers that a piece has is whether the piece is curated or featured by the Medium team. You will see some writers more than others. On an open platform where quality of writing is what matters, you should find, in theory, an equal balance of views. Some liberal, some conservative, some on the political left, some on the political right. You should find proponents of LGBTQ+ rights, and people against them, you should find a variety of voices reflecting the complexity of the global society we live in.

That seems not to be the case at the moment. Certainly not when it comes to politics and anything about society and rights. The tech stuff is more interesting and more varied — and there are some great stories out there.

When it comes to politics, I want to read articles of people I fundamentally disagree with. Instead, there are numerous variations on this article (which I agree with but am bored by) they can be summarised.

a) Trump and the political right is bad

b) Look how bad/stupid Trump and his supporters are. Here are some reasons and some links to follow.

c) Here are some reasons why we’re all better than him and why America and the world needs to change (but no meaningful ideas presented on how this should happen

d) Some sort of cute soundbite finish so that people feel compelled to clap.

Repeat ad-infinitum, get curated ad-infinitum, get clapped by everyone who agrees (but isn’t yet bored) and turn off any chance of a reasonable conversation about society. Medium then becomes an echo chamber but rather than an open combat zone like Twitter, it exists exclusively for left leaning liberals penning short articles they all agree with.
