It should come as no surprise that I'm a fan of Gervais, I think he's a few steps ahead of the rest of us - and that his unapologetic approach to difficult subjects is part of the appeal, he doesn't seem to mind offending people because he knows that most people aren't really offended, they just go through the motions of being offended in order to trigger a conciliatory response. I think almost all subjects can and should be spoken about in a lighthearted manner because even the most serious of subjects need to be made palatable.

I think it's a tough one - on the one hand I want to attract people who disagree with me wholeheartedly (as many people do) but also, I want to attract people who over-agree with where they think I politically sit. It's a careful tightrope to walk and a balance to strike - but I'd rather have that balance and then defend myself in the comments than simply become a writer who throws out predictable samey-same diatribes.

I think this may fuel the culture wars, but I'm also not convinced that white people think they have a culture. They're losing by default and that's interesting. We're seeing a huge rise in nihilism in (mostly) white young men. That's a real problem, because they keep going around the US and executing everyone they see and I think part of that is a failure to have these sorts of discussions. I would prefer young men not to be radicalised into White Supremacist movements - and like many things, I think the resurgence of such movements is, in part, a response to the failure of society to be even handed in its approach to certain subjects.

That's not an easy or popular thing to say but then I'm not here to write easy pieces. I can leave that to the 'all men are awful' brigade... because, and this is important, all men ARE awful. ;o)
