It's a complicated one. I have an ex-Penguin who was BPD and so I've experienced the instability and chaos first hand. People who have experienced it are fine tuned to see the chaos from miles away - but it takes a great deal of cognitive effort not to go into defence mode and come out fighting.

The way I see it those people who love unconditionally and then hate without reason (best description of BPD animist personality disorders ever) deserve empathy and compassion, because it speaks to a traumatic past, a very unstable present and a very lonely future.
