It's a hard one to weight out indeed - but I think we're putting effort into all the wrong places. We're running a system of financial revenge that doesn't really impact the abusers. Weinstein doesn't care if you don't ever watch another Weinstein film in your life - his money is already invested elsewhere. Weinstein cares that you nailed the filthy fucker in court and threw him jail. That's where the effort has to go.
By the time these people are rich enough and powerful enough for us to presume that boycotting their work hurts them, it doesn't. They've got investment portfolios and will become 'angel investors' on other projects away from public view. What we need to focus on is nailing people for crimes - that means legal overhauls, political campaigns and not feel good boycotts that, whilst cathartic, don't amount to very much and sometimes backfire in the long term.
