It's a little bit worrying for all the reasons you've outlined - though I think liberalism has turned into a faction based set up. Classic liberals have been shunted rightwards into the centre ground, we're economically left-wing, but not prepared to throw democratic process out of the window in order to mandate the sort of social reform we want. Progressives meanwhile are determined that freedom of speech should be curtailed because anyone but them and their particular brand of social justice thinking must be wrong. It's Far Right manoeuvres with an air-fresh scent of social justice.
I wrote about the problems emerging between classic liberals and progressives here. https://medium.com/the-panopticon-publication/can-the-us-overcome-its-addiction-to-populism-a247734cdbff
