I’ve been on this platform for a year, and it seems fairly balanced to me — and I’m very happy with the stories they’re curating and featuring lately. There seems to be a nice balance. That’s why I don’t think the future of Medium is women, or for that matter, men.
If Medium started to curate low quality writing based on gender alone, they’d have an exodus. If the platform was historically curating low quality writing by men in favour of high quality writing by women that would be problematic. If that was the case, I’m glad it’s stopped.
The rebalancing of curation that you’ve suggested has happened in the last year would bring a more diverse audience and that foresight is to be applauded. But to curate people on anything other than writing quality is tokenism.
I think there are occasionally pieces and writers featured on the home page who don’t offer a lot of insight. I suspect that was also true 3 years ago. I wrote about my frustrations here.
A level playing field is absolutely right — but that doesn’t mean the future is any gender at all. It means the future is exciting, interesting and without tokenism or gender prejudice.
