I’ve written a few times about the hard pass that the British monarchy gets about being a racist institution. Lots of perpetually woke people seem to overlook the insidious lack of equality baked in at the core. And in the U.K. at least, racism and classism have a slightly more complex relationship.
And that complex relationship doesn’t play well with woke politics. The firing of Danny Baker was a massive own goal that has largely turned the working class off the race message again.
Meghan and Harry (and to some extent Charles) are playing a dangerous game. The U.K. has a tacit commitment to royalty that goes like this…. You can rule, provided you don’t play politics and act fairly. The Queen has been on the throne for about a billion years and we have NO idea what she thinks about anything. Meghan arrived and brought activism and woke into the royal space – and the British public took exception to that.
We don’t like being lectured on privacy by people who make deals on their child’s photos. We don’t like being lectured on green issues by people who fly around in private jets. We don’t like these things because they fly against the tacit relationship between the monarchy and the subjects. That sort of self aggrandising hypocrisy is what liberal Hollywood is all about – and that’s where they belong.
Race plays into it – because it underpins the monarchy on a whole bunch of philosophical levels – but Meghan and Harry are also partially to blame for the current situation. It wasn’t entirely unpredictable and could’ve been avoided with a bit of forethought.
