Medium is probably profitable at the moment - but I think carefully curating a place where differences of opinion can come to the fore is a place to position yourself in the market. Many online newspapers are starting to this now with their opinion pieces - and I think Medium could capitalise on this, it simply needs to cultivate and grow the writers it wants.

I was here when it was very left-of-centre and everything was anti-Trump and radical progressive, the place was haemorrhaging readers. It became a Jessica Valenti newsletter devoid of any real substance - it was so frustrating. Those lefties will eventually get bored of reading the same pap over and over again.

I have no idea what is happening on X. I suspect the place is too toxic to turn around into anything useful, but i guess that's his problems. I think Medium is on the right course, that Tony Stubblebine has been very good for the platform and understands the writers and readers - but needs to steer the ship steadily down the centre.

What you want in your market share is the most intelligent half of each side. What they've got is all the people on one side, with disproportionate airtime to the tub-thumpers.
