Meh. The little mermaid is a story. It isn't a gay story or a straight story. It isn't arguably a white story or a black story. It's just a story. It is enough to simply be that. It has universal themes and that is what makes it a great story and one that has transcended the ages and survived many interpretations.
You're entitled to read the unfamiliar into it - and your interpretation of it is compelling, if a little like an English teacher who decides the curtains are blue because it signifies the depression of the protagonist. Sometime the curtains are just blue. Sometimes a story is just a good story, sometimes the people who tell it are just awesome and gay.
Stories are stories, universal stories about love, loss and unrequited feelings of belonging resonate with everyone. Besides... it's really about Penguins, we're the real mermaids of the sea. :o)
