No amount of favouritism or pet project would get you drafted into the national sports team… or into an Olympic squad. University, if it is going to be valuable, needs to be the social equivalent of academic elite. Only the best, only after rigorous selection and scouting. Other education may be necessary to fill the gaps, high school might need to up its game and workplaces might have to step up - the idea of inclusion is noble, but it has devalued higher education, not because X type of person is now at Uni, but because everyone is. Dilution of the original principles rather than considering how best to pan the river of life for Isaac Newtons (who almost became a farmer).
