Nope. Those with the privilege of a manor born background can play in the creative paddling pool because theatre can be their ‘hobby-job’ - a passion project to offset their trust fund. They have all the creative heft of a whelk and they spend a lot of time gatekeeping what they think other people want to see or writing absolute mediocrity but having the connections to fund it. Theatre has always been this way, but there were always routes into it, pockets of cash from those who understood the journey, little grants, little competitions. Alas, it has all gone by the wayside, and theatre is tumbling from a combination of Covid, creativity vampires and a failure of imagination. Great article. Very enjoyable. :o)
