Not at all — Trump is repugnant to me on all levels and I don’t agree with him on anything at all. But I also don’t agree that simply shutting down anyone who supports him (as you have tried to do) is conducive to progressing a meaningful discussion.
Curation should be an endorsement of quality of writing not a way of skewing the discourse. You only have to look at the back catalogue of GEN to see the bias in action. It’s simply monetising preaching to the converted, and doesn’t actually resolve any issues that are brought up.
As Medium has slid left (where my natural political home is) — I have slipped into the centre ground to counteract it. I am uncomfortable with movements based on ideologies and ideologues in general. Particularly those that attempt to shut down any question of the received wisdom of the group. You can find out why that’s the case by reading my article about how people who join a movement need to be aware of where it’s heading
I prefer discussion with individuals where ideas and concepts can be tested without attacks of an ad-hominem nature. If you have no respect or empathy for another human being because they disagree with your choice of President, what makes you think society is going to be able to move past that impasse?
In a more stark assessment — given that you want Trump out, what is appealing about a movement that will continually self destruct and rip itself apart along identity lines? Bernie might’ve been racist. Biden might be sexist. Obama might be a neo-liberal. Trump offers a simple message — and that appeals to his core base. Conservatives like familiarity — that doesn’t mean they’re evil — it means they don’t like rapid change and would prefer things to stay the same.
Only through discussion and taking into account the wishes and feelings of others does the left stand any chance of progressing its position in any meaningful way. Otherwise each individual faction might feel that they’re making progress — but this progress only at the expense of the other factions. A firing squad standing in a circle and hoping for the best.
