Not hypocritical per se, but misguided and moving society away from classic liberalism. The distinction between the two is important. I am a classic liberal, that means I'm pretty much happy for people to do or say things that don't impinge on the wellbeing of others. I'm more than happy to argue for the liberal position of rehabilitation for paedophiles.
But where classic liberalism and wokeism come unstuck is in the next phase. If you're a classic liberal then you also have to accept people's right to say things like "I don't care what people do their own bedrooms". Wokeism would define that as unnacceptable homophobia and oppression - a classic liberal would say that's freedom of expression. Nobody ever died of being offended regardless of what the memes may say. Wokeism attempts to enforce tolerance, and that goes against the concepts of liberalism. That is where progressives and liberals differ - and the two shouldn't conflated as the same thing. They have diverged.
Would I prefer people to stop being homophobic? Sure. Am I prepared to say that in public? Absolutely. Do I share the same goals as most woke people? Yep. The problem isn't with the end point, it's with the journey there. You can't argue for tolerance on your terms, whilst simultaneously policing the discourse and punishing those who disagree with you using social engineering. That's what this article tries to demonstrate. Woke people will dig themselves into a conflicting mess of ideologies.
Most people who read my work presume that I'm a right wing Trump voter. They're shocked to find that I'm a centre ground liberal and a left wing Brit- the idea that the political progressive left is an unquestionable force for good is misguided. Everyone thinks they're the good guy. The intentions of woke can be honourable. and they are - but that doesn't make it philosophically or poltiically valid. There is more going on here - and the further woke pushes the discourse away from centre ground liberalism, the more the demos will disengage.
You've got some good arguments here - and I am an argumentative penguin. Consider yourself followed and added to my list of people I'm going to enjoy arguing with :o)
