Not quite. He could be overwhelmed from anything, I don’t know him. He’s playing video games as a defence strategy because it gives small achievable goals and he’s lost his higher order executive function.
As you’ve said, self care is important and it’s a skill that some people have to learn - abs it’s one that isn’t taught. He isn’t depressed because he’s playing video games, he’s depressed so he’s playing video games. I suspect he thinks life has very little meaning - if he were to have people relying on him, as you have, it would be likely he could find meaning in that. That’s not where he seems to be in his life right now.
