Nothing beats a simple question.... and that's the big one. What's a human for?
Personally speaking, I'm heavily influenced by the Daoist thinking. I don't think humans are for very much. I think we're a tiny spark of independence from a wider greater experiment and without getting too hippy dippy and batshit about it, I think that's where we'll probably return. That's not a religious belief, more a spiritual belief.
I think modern society has become somewhat disconnected from the ebb and flow of the natural world. We have created profane spaces, we stopped being part of a greater whole and instead took the whole and put it into buildings like cathedrals. I think this was a profound mistake - because it has distorted our relationship with everything else.
I think the key to what we are will likely be found in what consciousness is. For what it's worth I think consciousness is very likely to be an emergent property related to quantum theory and I think if humans can unlock that, we will have a profound and radical change in how we view the universe and what that will mean for our collective ego. I think there are some interesting insights that come from current research around psychedelics in reducing anxiety, depression and psychological conditions like OCD. I'm intrigued to see what the next twenty or thirty years of research will bring in terms of understanding.
We have become convinced over the last 2000 years that 'being' and having money are the same thing and I don't believe that's the case. We have swapped the work of existing with the work for money and that's not a good psychological trade. Lots of people spend their entire lives chasing the idea of happiness rather than stopping to consider that chasing might be all there is and it's probably better to chill and relax.
If you haven't listened to any Alan Watts, I'd highly recommend doing so. :o)
