Of course - race is an issue to those people who care about race. Let's remember though We had our first Black MP here in the UK in the late 1700s, Dianne Abbott has been returned to Parliament since 1987 (so it might be about her being a woman) and Barack Obama was elected to be the most powerful man in the world not once, but twice in a place where the population is predominantly white.
Much as I'd love to click my fingers and do away with racists, that ain't going to happen. In the meantime though, it only seems to be of vital importance to people looking to scoring political points either for or against a pre-existing narrative. Such as 'Dianne Abbott was mean about Jewish people' or 'Barack Obama is a terrorist' - or my own favourite Brown on Black attack Rupa Huq on Kwasi Kwarteng about the validity of his race.
Most people outside of racists and anti-racists don't give much of a shit either way. There are far better metrics to judge people on than skin colour and you can't end racism by buying into the notion of race. :o)
