Once again - you need to watch the court case. Depp's substance abuse is generally well known and tolerated and written into his contracts. An expert testified that it is par for the course for many studios to overlook the drug/drink habits of their most profitable and bankable stars and to come up with work arounds. That is true of both male and female artists across the industry. 2018, when she wrote her op-ed was a watershed moment for accountability and one which is now likely to roll backwards because of an overreach into 'guilt at the point of accusation'

And yes, there is ample recording of them both being horrible to each other - but there is very little evidence, testimony or medical records to back up any physical abuse. The jury will decide if his behaviour constitutes abuse as it relates to what she wrote - but they're also being given evidence of her abuse of him to consider. It's unpleasant and it's laying everything bare, but it speaks to the complexity of the people involved and the case overall.

And yes, she didn't mention his name in the Op-Ed, that's why this case was hers to win. His burden of proof was very high. However, when she took the stand, she made it explicitly clear that she was writing about him and she's also made it explicitly clear that the 'sexual abuse' comment was about Depp. I suspect that was a client led decision, because it won't help her case and her legal team have struggled with her on redirects.
