Perfectly written article. I have a laissez-faire approach to it — having tried numerous times to explain the pros of immigration to my family. If we want the food from our farms, we will have to go and pick it. Those calling in the Blitz spirit will have a chance to go ‘Hopping’ like their grandparents, or fruit picking for less than minimum wage in the summer (which my parents did).

I suspect that enthusiasm for this will wane very quickly. Those people who have talking disparagingly about the ‘lazy unemployed’ now find themselves unemployed…. they aren’t lazy unemployed of course. They’re furloughed. As a result there’s plenty of currently under-used man-power in the UK. A theoretical 52% of this country is made up entirely of ‘blitz spirit’ and national pride — I’m just waiting for it to get to the fields and farms where it’s needed.

And if it doesn’t, we won’t have lovely nice fresh food and maybe there will be a steady rethink on our national priorities. I doubt it though. Britain doesn’t do introspection very well.
