Perhaps I’m just old and cynical, but this smacks more of Youtubers doing their best to virtue signal and secure their own income from adoring millennials than it does for climate change. This may be why it’s linked to the number of subscribers.
I would’ve been slightly more convinced if Mr Beast hadn’t blown up boats in a lake and given away free cars in the other videos you highlighted. I can’t see how either of those demonstrated any concern for the environment whatsoever. His Damascene conversion seems to have come about the time he needed a new way to generate some publicity for himself.
Others no doubt jumped on the bandwagon. They usually do.
If he wanted to make a real difference, he would’ve done more research and donated $20million towards a project that could’ve ensured a sustainable and marked difference. Unfortunately ‘investing in a hitherto unheard of programme to make a sustainable difference’ doesn’t have the same ring to it as #TeamTrees. The hashtag doesn’t scan.
On a more upbeat note, your article is great and a very enjoyable read — and perhaps I am just an old cynic who is done with the virtue signalling by preening infantalists (and their unthinking sheep-followers).
