Perhaps they didn’t read to the end, but I stand by the argument. Affirmative Action wasn’t mean to be long lasting (as you’ve said) but by the metaphor I’ve got here - it’s akin to widening the size of the podium rather than sorting out the rules of the race.
What you see, when this happens - is the emergence of two things. Resentment by other people running the race fairly (as they see it) and a laissez-faire attitude from those who managed to get on the podium. In this case middle class Black folks as sponsored by White liberals.
It will do nothing to address the underlying fairness of the race - rather than say funding schools properly, it simply presumed that equality of outcome (a place in university) was the best metric for accomplishment. It’s a lie and it served to line the pockets of elite families and corporate sponsors.
The race isn’t fair. Changing the size of the podium wasn’t the answer. In the long run I think it’ll do more harm than good - and that’s what I’ve explored in the article I linked. Thanks for rocking up and continuing the conversation :o)
