Put simply because those are the rules by which society are governed. We agree on the outcome not on the process. The argument to be made is about strengthening the legal process not kicking it aside in favour of social media vigilantism. That’s about greater education, specialist officers, protective practice in education, legal provision, changes to the law on issues like upskirting and revenge porn. If you think that announcing a sexual assault on social media helps achieve any of that then we fundamentally disagree. I think in the long run it’ll put more women in danger. It makes excellent headlines but it polarises the narrative – and as I’ve indicated high profile false accusations hurt more women than they help.

Societies function because of law. Laws can be changed by advocacy and by cases being brought to the top lawmakers. In its rawest form what you’re arguing for here is law vis mob mentality…. Guilt determined by popular opinion or social assuaged vigilantism. That’s a dangerous road for a society to tread, even if the initial intentions are considered for the good.
