Rygoldenm has made a very valid point and I've asked him to write an article so I can point people to it. I consider what happened next to be the law of unintended consequences though. Instead of increasing an understanding of autism as being neurodiverse in presentation, it has been interpreted as 'if I do X behaviour then I'm not normal, and therefore I must be neurodiverse' - we aren't sending people for more brain scans and furthering our understanding of the complexity of autism - we've opened the floodgates for opportunistic self-diagnosis which reduces the understanding of what autism is. I think in the long run that will have an affect on how those at the severe end of the spectrum are understood and cared for - and that's a problem
