So the problem with this argument is 'who gets to decide what constitutes identity' - there are plenty of demographics that have been unduly affected by the politics but aren't addressed. When you say 'minority group' - what do you actually mean?
Do short people count as an oppressed group? Do bald people count as an oppressed group? What about people with anemia? What exactly is it that constitutes an identity? Your advocacy argument works in a common sense environment - of course we should advocate for groups of people who are disenfranchised - I get that, I'm on board.... I'm not on board for everything it entails.
Yes BLM has done some great things, but over here in the UK it pivoted to take an anti-semitic stance very quickly. Derek Chauvin was arrested and convicted which is an excellent win for humanity, but one of the founders of BLM has bought a multi-million pound property whilst she's a Marxist.
When we centre one aspect of identity (such as skin colour) and remove the right to discuss and debate then we're asking for a mess. Who is the voice of BIPOC on Medium? Steve QJ and Marley K couldnt' be further apart from each other. Jeremy Helligar and Jeannette C Espinoza are in the centre ground between them. Why on earth we would choose to lump all these people together under some arbitarily defined aspect of their identity and presume they have a) a commonality of perspective and b) a coherent strategy.
The vast majority of people on the planet, including both of us, want everyone to get along and to make the world a less horrible place. I think that arbitarily deciding facets of identity as the focal point is the wrong move.... and the more I'm writing this the more I think this is what we need to write a joint article about.
I think we're both right and I think we're both wrong depending on how you look at it - and I think we should put it out there as an agreed article (however that can be done) and show our working before drawing different but reasonable conclusions and cross-posting. Sometimes I think our arguments are wasted on each other. :o)
