Something interesting has emerged from this comments section... and I appreciate that most readers don't get the full overview of it that I have. It seems that the diary is read far more in the US and forms far more of the curriculum than perhaps it does over here in Europe. I didn't study it at all, it was obliquely referenced throughout my education but we never studied it - and people from Australia and the Netherlands have implied a similar thing.
I don't think this is a white-privilege thing, I have come to believe this is more of an anti-fascist/anti-totalitarianism thing. Perhaps that's the disconnect in the discussion here.... Anne Frank, despite me being able to get to her house in a little under 4 hours door to door (if I wanted to) just isn't a big deal here. Perhaps because we have so many reminders of what WWII did, we don't elevate her work beyond its station.
It's been interesting. But that's what I think the comments section is for. The more I write on Medium the more inclined I am to spend more time in the comments section than I am in the article :o)
Thanks for dropping by!
