Sure. But the rebuttal was more about how white people didn't like any TV show that featured an all black cast - and tbf, the show was a lot more subversive than people remember it being. They snuck a load of important stuff under the radar because they pretended it was a comedy.

And most of the time it was... until it wasn't. What the writers did, was subvert expectations. They took a black family and made them 'white' - then mocked the whole of white culture and got white folks to laugh at it. Then they brought in an outside 'Fresh Prince' character to highlight the difference between the working class black experience and the white privilege experience and got the white audience to side with the black character and mock 'white conservatives' - and they absolutely nailed it.

And then occasionally they'd do something really hardcore and shock the sensibilities of their audience - and becuase it was a comedy, those characters saying those things were uncomfortable and did make people face history.

Like when Aunt Viv and Uncle Phil talks about facing dogs and hoses at Birmingham https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOYG3GDfjbY

When Will has to explain to Carlton about how the police racially profiled them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYGnO11m8HE

When Carlton is called a Sellout and a race traitor because he inherited wealth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5D2RvIQwQE

And this glorious scene where Will confronts Carlton about owning a gun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_ICoWY-6U4

and the best scene of all - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMNsMdnSBIk - not specifically race related, but certainly questioning the nature of inherited trauma and absent parenting. It's still a hard watch and still one that still gives me tingles even now.

Looks like a comedy, sounds like a comedy, functioned like a comedy. But as someone who writes for a living, I can tell you this was a masterclass in social commentary masquerading as a funny show. It was so far ahead of it's time, I'm not sure most people caught up. :o)
