Sure. That's a valid rebuttal and people have a right to privacy - and this article is a thought experiment... but I don't understand why we don't trust market forces to operate here, particularly when everyone is so bullish on market forces being the principle factor behind economic success.

And yes, other people aren't your responsibility, but that comes with a few caveats. I would like to know, for example, that the people caring for my elderly grandmother in her care home aren't simply employed because they are the only people accepting a wage that low (we have big problems in the UK with residential abuse stemming from some poor quality employment).

"Good enough" pay being subjective is correct. Put simply if you have access to all the information about what other people are paid across all other jobs, you can make a better informed decision about whether the offer you're being made is 'good enough'. In short, shit jobs would need to be paid better and that'd drive the quality of applicants and the workforce up.

As you said... it's all opinion though - but what sort of argumentative penguin doesn't argue the toss? Thanks for your response and adding to the discussion. :o)
