That depends on whether you think the Russian are restoring their empire or shoring up their borders. That's yet to play out and I'm prepared to accept it's an unknown

NATO expansion has been happening since the 1990s, creating a bigger sphere of influence for the US army and US capitalists who are selling their weapons to Eastern Europe. Playing devil's advocate (because that's what I do), the eventualities that are playing out now have been long predicted. Let's presume the Russians started massing an army off the coast of Alaska in the far tip of Siberia, or decided it was going to re-ignite its relationship with Cuba, or forge a new alliance with Mexico. Would the Americans tolerate this? Would an invasion of Mexico be justified or not?

Russia may not be threatened by the West in any overt way, but the CIA has had its fingers in plenty of pies over the last fifty years or so. Almost always avoiding being burned but leaving a terrible mess when they've gone.
