That fully reflects my experience too. I was here for a year or so before I decided to Bird-up and become a provocative opinion writer with occasional forays into politics, psychology, history, and humour.

I don’t think you necessarily need to decide what to write, but the honing of voice becomes more important the longer you stay. I can almost always tell a newbie writer because they cautious, more safe and stick closely to writing rules. Becoming a better writer I’d argue is about this, then subverting this and getting nowhere, then making your own rules and style which work. Writing is a craft. One worth sticking with. :o)
