That, I would suggest is a problem with the education system and not with the boys. I have had plenty of kids in my classes over the years who could not sit still in mainstream education but who were perfectly fine doing drama with me - their behaviour cleared right up. It might not necessarily be that they are neurologically divergent, just their learning style does not favour sitting still and paying attention to problems they might consider pointless (I may be biased because I hate maths). Should you change the education system model away from the industrial revolution factory model of standard modes of learning, you might find the drugs would be unnecessary - there's a great talk by Ken Robinson you can probably find on Youtube about this very thing.
Medication may make people fit the world better - but we should be very wary of what we're asking them to fit into. Perhaps it's not the kids that can't sit still who need the help, perhaps it's the rest of us. ;o)
And I say that as someone who was both academic and couldn't sit still. I was, and continue to be, an absolute nightmare. :o)
